Online Art Auction - Vietnam: more than war - Bamboo & Canvas Scrolls - #2 Descend from Dragon - $140-$720
click on above image to enlargeSo here is the second scroll up for auction. One of my favorites, this is a detail of glass and ceramic mosaic found in Tomb of Khai Dinh, Hue.
Bit about the scrolls:
Bamboo was used as symbol for peace and harmony and chosen for its simplicity. Harvested fresh, then heat-cured to increase the strength and yield a brown finish, using the resin released as a varnish, the process proved meditative.
Scroll format chosen in respect to great poets in Vietnam's history, leading people throughout societal change while keeping culture alive.
Hemp twine was used, well, for obvious reasons. Believed to be outstanding energy source, medicine, and textile material...did not see reason not to use it.
Painting on the scrolls took awhile to build courage to do so. The idea was to marry two historically rival mediums i.e. photography says, "you're outdated!" and painting, "you're not art!", finding a place to co-exist. So teamed up with good friend and painter, Ben Betsalel, to experiment with this idea. Also, contrast and balance among the real and abstract, was another idea to be explored and contemplated. Lastly, with the advent of digital photography, I felt the need to become hands-on with the medium again.
Happy Bidding!
bidding instructions found in previous post
ps- the auction, for now, only includes the scrolls. my self-portrait piece is just an example of what the custom fine art photography products look like and is no longer for sale...thx to smack for bringing this to my attention -mgmt

Online Art Auction - Vietnam: more than war - Bamboo & Canvas Scrolls - #1 Smile without Guile - $140-$720
please click above image to enlargeWhy not sale these experimental scrolls with an experimental sales approach? This is the question I asked before coming up with an idea, an online blog auction. Here's how it works:

-there is a price range established for every piece, the lowest price being the initial bid
-you can bid on the artwork using the comments button at the bottom of post
-please use the Name/Url option for identity choice
-enter your bid with your email address in the comments field, the first bid having already been placed as an example
-there is an undisclosed time limit for each piece ranging from 5-12 days, predetermined before release
-if you are the highest bidder at the end of time limit you win the scroll!
-once winning, you will be notified by email
-from your purchase, 14% of proceeds will be donated to the Vietnam Relief Effort
shipping is free to North Carolina residents - shipping outside of NC will vary depending on destination - final bid price does not include 7% sales tax to be added on at end of auction

Testimonial
"Paul Jackson, of Monty Tran Photography, attended an opening in the Pump Gallery, located in the Phil Mechanic Studios building, one evening. While he was here, Paul was able to accurately capture the vibe of the crowd, the artwork, and the space through the lens of his creative mind and digital camera.
As I looked through the photographs, later on that week, two painterly and abstract images really caught my attention. This resulted in a commission where Paul merged the two images and created a giclee for my private collection, which is permanently on display in the Phil Mechanic Studios building.
Paul executed the commission beautifully. It was difficult to imagine that it would be possible to create a coalescence that would eradicate any sign of the separate images, but such is Paul's work. He brings together elements of color, style, and light within a haze of representation and abstraction. True to the subject matter he is working with, Paul has the unique ability to generate a successful harmony of unification.
Paul completed the piece on schedule, as promised, and then he delivered and installed it as well. Paul, very professionally, combines his artistic abilities with sound and structured business practices, and is the consummate professional."
