National Geographic Adventurer Magazine: First In

Today I blazed through my images from Vietnam and put together a selection for Kezi Barry, the assistant photo editor at National Geographic Adventurer Magazine for their "First In" feature, which includes a full spread, two pages, of an image. Hopefully they'll find one or more that suits their tastes and image needs, above are several that I submitted.

Georgi Bora: Memesis

Over the weekend I spent some time down at the Wedge Gallery hanging out with good friend and painter Georgi Bora. He is currently working all hours of the day in preparation for his next show, at Vadim Bora's (his father) gallery, in downtown Asheville. The show is titled "Memesis" and the opening is on April 4th at 7pm. Here is a preview of the painter at work and his work in progress.

Bruce's Fabulous Foods

Last week I drove to Marion to cover a food profile story for WNC Magazine. The spot? No other than Bruce's Fabulous foods, complete with a selection from an expanding list of 128 different flavors of cheesecake. I had the peanut butter and jelly cheesecake, and yes, it was awesome, this coming from someone who rarely eats desserts and I was definitely impressed. I was not the only one though, the girl in the above photo claimed that she did not like cheesecake at all, but Bruce had just the right flavor for her and after he "converted her", a high-five was in order!

VRE Editing Process

So I've been editing through all of the images captured during the five days of shooting with the Vietnam Relief Effort in January 08...locations including schools throughout Tien Giang Province, in Ben Tre, and Phu Yen. From the 4800 taken, I have selected 500, from there I will chose 200, and from those I will pick the final 90 to send to VRE. It is hard work but rewarding, especially when finding a gem of a shot/moment...which until now has been overlooked many times, and only comes to fruition in post-processing after being found as a potential image, as in the case of the one above.

Phil Mechanic Studios Art Opening

It is good to be back in Asheville. Tonight I went down to Phil Mechanic Studios in the River Arts District to check out, well, some art. This was a two-part show: first, a selection entitled "Samples" featuring many different decorative painting styles and finishes by Jesi Trentham, her husband Hawg, and Laura Decker. The second was a series of photographs by Jeff Zimmerman showcasing the Southern Appalachian Mountains. I have updated the portfolio section with a photo essay from the evening. Hope you enjoy.
