Production
As the date of the family inspired, fine art photography exhibit and benefit nears, all the products are coming to completion. The calendar, in which I stayed up from 9pm to 8am one night last week designing and fine tuning, is now being sent to print and is priced at a modest $15. This is a 13 month calendar, December 2006 to December 2007, incorporating 15 original images not included in the final series of 18 that are being exhibited.
The t-shirt is ready and is also available at $15. It comes in two colors, yellow and sand, and is stylized in a very fashionable manner with appropriate and playful type-work by one of Asheville's finest graphic designers, Tom Parsons. They will be printed by Image 420 in West Asheville, now how good is that!
My Uncle Tang brought these wonderful hand-painted silk pieces back from Vietnam. Beverly at Merrimon Galleries graciously donated the full framing of one piece and mating of the rest with a certificate for framing. These will also be for sell at the benefit.
Now on to the nitty gritty, the guts and glory, the bread and butter, you now, the limited edition prints and large format scrolls. The editing process was a grueling one, and after making the final cut I arrived at the final series of 18 (note: basic numerology says add the numbers to find the core number, 9 in this case, a very auspicious number in Vietnamese culture indeed), encompassing everything that I'm trying to express in this show, basically ideals of high morality and design, a call to arms, to live to your full potential with a positive perspective on life and the living. And there's more to these pieces of canvas with ink on them, I ask you to have fun figuring it out for yourself, to react, bringing you closer to understanding yourself, therefore freeing yourself to live without fear.
Oh yea, the prints, focus, focus...will be displayed as large format scrolls (ranging from 3'-4' x 5'-6'), hung with bamboo. For this I have harvested living bamboo, cutting them down with a machete acquired in Jamaica when I was fifth-teen on a mission trip with a Moravian youth group (note: I claim no religion for my own, however I participate in many different rituals of many different faiths, since they are meant to bring people together mentally, physically, and spiritually...I will forever be a student of Belief and Biology and my religion of choice is Buddhism). Focus...from there I've cut off the limbs and the remaining poles to desired lengths, and heat cured these poles with a propane torch. This strengthens the bamboo and releases a natural resin that when buffed with a rag, creates a glossy coat...nice eh? Then I've cut one lengthwise slit into the bamboo where I will place the canvas, one pole on top of image and one on the bottom, hang with twine, eureka, a scroll!
Finally, if the scroll does not fit your taste, there will be a limited edition set of 25 prints for each image available on canvas for order, all at 18" x 24", signed and numbered. These are being printed by Michelle at Double Exposure. Her work is top-notch, she has clients across the nation, even though the best work she reproduces in my opinion is out of Asheville, and they are certified to last 100+ years, pass on the love yall!
